Tonight was a trip to the North East Scotland League, in the village of Strichen, some eight miles southwest of Fraserburgh. Mormond Thistle play at the Bert Fowlie Arena, which is just an open pitch behind Ritchie Hall, on the eastern edge of the village. There’s a good sized car park and toilets are available in the main building, but that’s it as far as spectator facilities go.
The match was 3rd versus 2nd in the league table, where a win for either side would see them leapfrog Longside Athletic at the top of the table, as the leaders were in cup action tonight. A draw would see the top three stay as they were. Invercairn took a fourteenth minute lead, breaking down the right before pulling the ball back for a first time shot low into the far corner of the net. It was the first time they’d managed to get out of their own half since the kick off. The equaliser came after thirty seven minutes, holding off a defender before twisting and sending a low shot into the far corner. Mormond almost went in front right on halftime, but a looping 25 yarder hit the crossbar, so it remained 1-1 at the break. Within seconds of the restart Invercairn went back in front, when a pull back across the box was smashed in from close range. Five minutes later a stooping header at the far post saw Mormond level it up at 2-2 and five minutes later they made it 3-2, scoring with a penalty. It was 4-2 a couple of minutes later, when a long punt forward saw a forward hold off a defender before shooting on the turn, giving the ‘keeper no chance. Eight minutes later it was 5-2, when a header back across the box was met with another header that went over the ‘keeper. Somehow, that was the end of the scoring, but certainly not the end of the chances, as both teams could easily have scored another couple each.
The win now sees Mormond Thistle go above former leaders Longside Thistle on goal difference and they still have two games in hand to extend their lead further.
