With this being such an early kick off, I was expecting proceedings to begin a bit later than scheduled, but on arrival at the ground at 17.28, it was nice to see both teams already on the pitch doing their warm ups !

Burghfield have been promoted into the Premier Division this season, losing their opening match 1-5 at home to Wraysbury Village on Saturday. It was the opening match of the season for the visitors tonight and when they led 0-2 and 1-3, it looked like being a second defeat for the hosts. Having reduced the arrears to 2-3, Burghfield scored what looked to be a cracking volleyed equaliser with a couple of minutes left, but it was ruled to have been offside. They were not to be denied though and as we reached the ninety minute mark they headed a deserved equaliser.

This is probably one of the better grounds in this league, helped by the fact that Crickhowell have played at a higher level in the past, having spent a number of years as members of the Mid Wales League.

This was the season opener for both teams, so it is hard to judge what type of season they will have. Crickhowell could have won more comfortably, had they not had a penalty saved just after the hour mark.

This was my third and probably final visit to Harlington Sports Ground. I had previously seen Chelsea U18 play here (21.9.2002) on a pitch in the far left hand corner of the ground when looking from the entrance, before returning on 25th October 2017, when I saw Imperial College play on the 3G Pitch, which is to the right of the clubhouse, adjacent to the entrance. Today’s pitch is to the left of the entrance and runs lengthways in front of the clubhouse.

Forest were really poor in the first half and deservedly trailed 2-0 at the break. They then scored three times in a seven minute spell around the hour mark, but Rangers levelled it up at 3-3 with the goal of the game from the corner of the 18 yard box.

Having to be discreet, along with the fact that spectators are limited to one side of the pitch, made taking photos awkward, but I did manage to get a few snaps…….

This match was certainly not on the radar when we headed up the M1 this morning. We were actually intending to watch Stapleford Town versus Attenborough in the Nottinghamshire Senior League (chosen because the home club were issuing their first ever programme and the driver today is obsessed with programmes for some reason), but at 13.52 it became apparent that Attenborough could not be bothered to turn up and play the fixture, giving the pathetic excuse of a lack of players as the reason. This is the problem with many leagues nowadays. They seem to think that the league looks more ‘professional’ if they force clubs to issue programmes, when surely getting clubs to actually turn up and play their matches would give people a far better impression. Perhaps I’m wrong ?

Anyway, we needed to find an alternative match. This would normally be straightforward, but when the three of us in the car have visited a total of 14,000 grounds combined, the task is much harder. By the time we had settled on Magna ‘73, we would be arriving at the ground in 52 minutes time, according to SatNav, just a minute before the scheduled 3 o’clock kick off. As it was, we arrived at 14.57, so plenty of time !

Magna should have really had this sewn up well before halftime, but a combination of woeful finishing and an away ‘keeper in top form meant the visitors were always in with a chance of getting something from the game. It was only when Magna scored their fourth goal that the three points looked safe for them.

In the end it turned out to be a good day out. I can now add Attenborough to my list of clubs to avoid as an away team, especially if I want the match to take place !

Despite being in the Forest of Dean, Woolaston is much more accessible coming from the south, via the M4, then heading north through Chepstow. It is much easier than battling the traffic on the A40 if going via Oxford and Gloucester and with four of us in the car the £5.60 toll to get into Wales doesn’t feel too bad. According to a sign just before the toll booths, the charges will finally cease in December 2018 !

Tonights match was between two teams who had won their opening Division 2 matches at the weekend. It looked destined to be heading for penalties, but Woolaston finally made the breakthrough with a minute left to play. I can’t recall Bredon making the home ‘keeper make a save, whilst the home teams finishing was awful.

Courtesy of big wins on Saturday, this was 2nd versus 1st in the league table, albeit only one match into the season. Tiptree had won Division 2 last season, winning 21 of their 22 matches, but have some how by-passed Division 1 and are straight into the Premier Division. Peverel finished last season in mid table.

Both teams were intent on attacking at every opportunity, so it was no surprise to see seven goals in this. The late goal for Tiptree made it look closer than it actually was and Peverel were deserved winners.

I decided to make the trip down the M20 today, to see newly promoted Hawkinge Town entertain Tudor Sports, who finished fifth in the league last season. It was a game of good quality and was very hard fought and perhaps a draw may have been a fair result.

* The club tweeted a photo of the programme for today’s match, but there was no evidence of there being one and there was no attempt to sell any, so I assume it didn’t exist.

Both these clubs play in the Cambridgeshire County League, the hosts in Division 2B, with Benwick one level lower, in 3B. Wimblington took an early lead and were on top for large periods of the match, even when they were reduced to ten men when one of their players was ‘sin binned’ for 10 minutes during the first half, this being the first time I have been at a match where the sin bin rule is in operation.

The goal of the night came in the last minute, when a 25 yarder was curled past the visitors ‘keeper with the outside of the boot by home player Dale Richardson. The only disappointment on the night was that the match was played on the second pitch, which is the far side of the cricket square from the clubhouse.

Well, this was certainly a bit of a waste of an evening, although I suppose at least it was a match that was completed, but from a spectators point of view, it was rubbish.

Ilmington are new into the league this season, but are a total embarrassment. They only had 7 players for the duration and only played the match due to the league telling them they would be fined £75 if they failed to do so. They claimed that the rest of the squad were on holiday, although a check on the F.A. Full Time website shows that they only have 12 players registered anyway. They are certainly a club I will avoid at all costs in the future, although I only watch matches in this league during the first midweek of the season, so it won’t cause much of a problem.

Had we known earlier (it was about 3 minutes before kick off that we found out they were going to play with just 7 players) we could have gone to see South Redditch Athletic versus Inkberrow ‘A’ instead, (the only other ground the three of us in the car hadn’t visited) which was being played at Henley in Arden College, not the normal home club venue. That finished 16-2 !

When I lived in Brussels this was my nearest ground, but despite living no more than fifteen minutes walk away, I never got round to seeing a match here. Today was the ideal opportunity to rectify that as the driver was heading for a match at R. Ixelles S.C. which is under ten minutes away by car, so perfect for a drop off.

Etterbeek are newly promoted into Provincial 1, whilst Maccabi are in Provincial 2. This was easily the best match of the weekend, with both sides putting in a real effort for the entire game. Etterbeek were just too strong. Maccabi missed a penalty, but it was already 4-0 by then, so it wouldn’t have made much difference to the final outcome if it had been scored.

Back at The Tunnel they were again failing to run to any sort of timetable. We left on a train at 21.18 that was certainly not on the schedule.
