I was actually heading for a cup match at Sheering in the Hertford & District League. My estimated arrival time was an hour before kick off according to what my SatNav was saying when I left home, already factoring in a delay of 14 minutes en route. The roads around the approach to the Dartford Crossing were in total gridlock, and by now I was looking at arriving just 4 minutes before kick off. There was no movement of the traffic whatsoever, even though I had managed to circumnavigate a fair few miles of the queue by taking a route away from the M25. I decided to bail out and head for a game in the Rochester & District League instead and arrived at my alternate choice nearly an hour before the kick off.

I don’t know why I didn’t just head here in the first place. It was 2nd versus 1st in the league table, in what was both teams last game of the season and the visitors led the table by a point. There was a decent crowd too, helped no doubt by the fact that both clubs play their home games here. There were also three match officials on duty, but I wouldn’t think this is the norm, for what is tier two of this league.

It was a very tight first half. Cliffe United scored early on and could have been two or three up. Half an hour into the game an A.E.I. player left the field with an injury, and his day was made worse, when he received a red card for something he said to the Linesman as he was getting changed out of his kit at the side of the pitch. It was still only 0-1 at the break, but within two minutes of the restart Cliffe United doubled their lead and when it became 0-3 eight minutes later, the title was won. A.E.I. let their heads drop and they totally capitulated. Cliffe United didn’t ease off and ran in three more goals, with little resistance from a tiring looking home defence. A cracking free kick from the angle of the 18 yard box did pull it back to 1-6, but the visitors soon restored their six goal lead. With the last kick of the match, a cross from wide on the touch line sailed over the ‘keeper into the far corner of the net to make it 2-7, but it was little consolation to the hosts. They had been well and truly beaten.

Cliffe United certainly looked like worthy champions. They were unbeaten during the league season, with a 1-1 draw with Sittingbourne Town being the only game they didn’t win.

This season has seen competitive football return to Middleham for the first time since the demise of Middleham Town at the end of 2007/08 season. The setting here is superb. The scenic views would take some beating, with the surrounding rolling hills and the magnificent Middleham Castle that looms large beyond the goal at the entrance end of the ground. Difficulty with access to their former ground at Wensleydale School in Leyburn, following the erection of new security fencing, saw them lead a nomadic existence last season before making the switch to their new home in Middleham, three miles to the south.

The league title would be decided tonight. If Unicorn won by two clear goals they would pip Richmond Town Reserves to top spot on goal difference. Well, a two goal win would see them finish with the same goal difference, but Unicorn would take the title as they have scored more goals.

A blistering start saw Unicorn race into a 0-3 lead in little more than half an hour, so they just needed to see the game out from there. By the hour mark it was 0-4. Second from bottom Leyburn had nothing to play for (no automatic relegation from this league), but never gave up. They pulled it back to 1-4, but Unicorn replied almost immediately, wrapping up a 1-5 win and the title with it.

Next Wednesday the two clubs meet again, when they play in the Dales Cup Final at the ground of Reeth Athletic.

These two have been in a three way fight for the title along with A.F.C. Cressex, who have already finished their fixtures and top the table on 39 points. Barton Rovers were second on 35 points and would have one match to play after tonight. They were so confident that they will win their last match that they had tweeted yesterday that a win here tonight would see them crowned champions! Pundit were third with 30 points, with three to play, although no result has appeared yet for their game last Saturday (it was mentioned that they drew 1-1, which means they now can’t win the league, although this may not be correct).

Even if they can’t now win the league, Pundit still had a chance to grab the second promotion place, and would still have a massive say on which of the other two would end up as champions. As it turned out, it went the way of A.F.C, Cressex. Pundit were the better side from the off and Barton Rovers looked really poor. There was plenty of effort, but very little attacking flair from either side and it looked like it would end up a certain 0-0 from quite early on. The deadlock was finally broken eleven minutes from time, when a 20 yard free kick was fired into the bottom corner of the net to win it for the hosts.

The Cricklade Supreme Trophy and Plate is an end of season tournament organised by Cricklade Town F.C. It involves 32 teams, that play across seven leagues, spanning five different counties. There are eight groups, with four teams in each, with the top two advancing to the knockout stages of the Supreme Trophy, whilst the bottom two drop into the Plate competition.

Tonight’s game saw Chesterton (top of Stroud League Division 1, with 100% winning record from their eight matches played when COVID-19 brought things to a halt) host the final (following a late switch from the ground of Hatherop F.C.) against a Malmesbury Victoria Development side that were just below mid-table of the Wiltshire Senior League.

It looked like the visitors had put the game out of reach when they volleyed in a second goal just before halftime to lead 0-2 at the break. It looked even more so when it became 0-3 twelve minutes into the second half, when a through ball was calmly slotted past the ‘keeper, but a quick reply from Chesterton pulled it back to 1-3 with almost half an hour to play. With fourteen minutes left they scored again to make it 2-3 and four minutes later they were level, when a cross was diverted by a defender into his own net as he tried to clear the ball. MVD had two great chances to win it in the dying seconds, but both efforts were well saved by the home ‘keeper.

It was straight to penalties at the end of 90 minutes and Chesterton completed their comeback by winning the shootout 9-8 after 10 penalties for each side.

The tournament has been so well received it looks like now becoming an annual event.

The Westmorland F.A. Cup Finals are normally played at the ground of Kendal United F.C., but with the final being scheduled so late in the season, it meant it was unavailable, so they were switched to the excellent ground of Vale of Lune R.U.F.C. instead, even though it is in Lancashire!

Milnthorpe, the cup holders, were looking to win the trophy for the twentieth time in their history and Marsh never really looked like denying them. It took them thirty three minutes to open the scoring, but having broken the deadlock, it took them just six more minutes to race into a 3-0 lead. A deflected shot saw Marsh reduce the arrears just before halftime, but it was little more than a consolation goal. Three more goals, the last of which was a penalty, saw Milnthorpe cruise to a comfortable 6-1 win. The one sided match wasn’t a great watch from a neutral point of view, but the close on 9 hours spent behind the wheel, on a surprisingly trouble free journey both ways, were certainly worth it to tick off a rare ground hosting football.

The Saints Cup takes it’s name from The Saints Pub, which is in the Millbrook area of Southampton, across the road from the Mansel Park ground of Bush Hill F.C. There are two groups of three teams, playing on a round robin basis, where they play each other once, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi finals. These two had both lost their opening matches to Bush Hill, 0-4 in the case of Testlands and 1-5 for Hedge End Rangers, so this game was winner takes all.

The first half was pretty even (this was 4th v 3rd in Division 1 of the Southampton League, as far as final league positions go for the season), but Testlands managed to take a 2-0 lead into the interval. Three goals in the opening twenty minutes of the second half saw them go 5-0 up, before the visitors pulled a goal back. A penalty then saw Testlands go 6-1 in front and it could have been seven a couple of minutes later, but having been awarded a second penalty, they let their ‘keeper take it, but his effort was well saved. Hedge End Rangers rounded off the scoring, pulling it back to 6-2, with a far post header late on.

Eldon Celtic normally play at Whitley Wood Recreation Ground in Reading, but they couldn’t guarantee that it would be available today, as there was a possibility that the council would have removed the goal posts, so the game was switched here just in case. Wargrave had actually scheduled a couple of their home matches here, but on both occasions the opposition pulled out as they couldn’t be bothered to put a team out, but no problems of that today.

The match was 4th versus 2nd in the league table. The top two places are already decided, but the battle for the title is still very much on. Reading Y.M.C.A. were five points ahead (3 to play) with Wargrave having a game in hand. They meet at Reading Y.M.C.A. in the last match of the season.

Eldon Celtic certainly pushed Wargrave all the way and it certainly wasn’t as clear cut as the 0-3 score line suggests. In fact, had Eldon Celtic scored one of three very good chances when it was still 0-0, then it could have been so different. The deadlock was finally broken twenty minutes into the second half, when a through ball was taken around the ‘keeper and coolly slotted in, then ten minutes later it was 0-2 when a challenge on the edge of the 18 yard box saw the ball fall kindly for a striker to sweep the ball into the far corner of the net. The third goal came with the last kick of the match.

With Reading Y.M.C.A. beating third placed F.C. Imaan Lions 5-1 today, it is as they were at the top. Wargrave must win away at Rotherfield United on Wednesday, then again at bottom of the table Cookham Dean Reserves next weekend (good chance CDR will forfeit as they have failed to play 4 matches already!) to take it to the last match, as Reading Y.M.C.A. have already been a awarded a walkover for next Saturday as Westwood Wanderers Reserves can’t be bothered to fulfill the fixture!

This was 6th versus 10th (bottom) in the league table. The only thing riding on it was that W&C Reserves could still save themselves from relegation, but they would have to win their remaining four games and hope other results went their way, so very unlikely. Even more so when a glance at their results sees they have managed to pick up just five points this season (one of those since deducted by the league) with two 0-0 draws and just one win, although that was against Datchet!

Midway through the first half Datchet scored twice in three minutes and when a third was added before halftime it was game over. Within two minutes of the restart it was 4-0. W&C Reserves were reduced to ten men when they had a player sent off just after the hour mark and their ‘keeper was lucky he didn’t join him later on, picking up just a yellow card, when he rushed from his area and hacked down an oncoming forward who looked clean through on goal. The goal of the night came when a corner was volleyed in to put Datchet 5-0 up and W&C Reserves got a late consolation goal, which was well deserved, as they never gave up and looked a better side than their record for the season shows.

Marlow United have returned to their ground here in Gossmore Lane, following a number of years away whilst flood defence work was carried out here. During that time they have played at Marlow F.C. and they also had a season at Loudwater Sports Club, where I saw them beat Wokingham & Emmbrook Reserves 5-1 on 23rd August 2017. Although the pitch here was nice and flat, the grass hadn’t been cut for weeks and it is probably the longest grass I have seen a game played on, and that includes pitches used in various Summer Leagues, which are as bad as it gets. Apparently the council had failed to turn up today to cut it. They still have two more home games scheduled here, so the pitch will certainly need cutting before that.

Finchampstead came here as league leaders, in a three way fight for the title with Berks County and Burghfield. Marlow United are third from bottom, but can’t finish any lower than this. I had seen the reverse fixture back in May, which Finchampstead won 4-1, where Marlow United battled well, but never looked like getting anything from the match. It was the same story tonight, as Finchampstead were 0-2 up inside fifteen minutes, before a twice taken penalty (the ‘keeper saved the first, but was off his line) just after the half hour mark saw the game made safe at 0-3. Marlow United managed a consolation goal with the last kick of the match.

Berks County also won tonight, but the title is getting nearer for Finchampstead, who are on 55 points (+ 29 goal difference) with three to play, followed by Berks County on 52 points (+ 29 GD) with two to play, with Burghfield in third place on 47 points (+ 18 GD) with 3 games left.

This was the game of the day in the Premier Division as 1st hosted 2nd. Britwell were two points ahead of Old Windsor, with both teams having three matches left including this one. Singh Sabha Slough were also in the race for the title, as they have four to play and although they are two points behind Old Windsor, they still have to play the top two, so the title is very much within reach.

Britwell took an early, but Old Windsor shaded the first half and were unlucky to trail 1-0 at the break. When Britwell scored early in the second half to go 2-0 up, it looked all over for the visitors and when they had a man sent off with sixteen minutes left there certainly looked no way back. With ten minutes left Old Windsor were awarded a penalty, which was scored at the second time of asking, after the ‘keeper was judged to have come off his line when saving the first effort. Britwell seemed to panic, having been cruising to the three points and they looked nervous at the back. Five minutes into stoppage time the visitors were awarded another penalty. This time it was smashed straight down the middle to make it 2-2.

As the away team celebrated near to their dugout, the home ‘keeper ran across and punched the scorer, then as some sort of calm was being restored, a home ‘fan’ ran 30 yards from the home team dugout area and punched one of the visitors in the back of the head from behind, knocking him to the floor in the process. He attempted another four or five punches, but never actually managed to land any. At this point the Referee abandoned the match.

It will now be up to the league to decide what punishment Britwell will receive, as it was certainly their actions that brought the game to a halt. As it stands at the moment, they retain their two point lead over Old Windsor, but third placed Singh Sabha Slough won their game today to go within two points of the top themselves.

Above : The stoppage time penalty that led to the game being abandoned.
