After turning up here before, only to find that the game had been postponed, it was second time lucky today. Well, lucky in the fact that I saw a match, but the quality was awful, especially Ecclesia College, easily the worst team I have ever seen in university football.

I had an option of leaving this one as the SCAC Championship Play Offs will be held here, but decided to do it for the actual home team. I should have left it, as this was absolute rubbish, neither side would have scored if they had played all day.

Apart from battling with rush hour traffic through the centre of Dallas, this was a nice easy double with the Paul Quinn College match played in Mesquite.

Paul Quinn College are playing their home games at Eastfield College whilst a new ‘soccer’ pitch is constructed at their own campus. This was a real bonus as Eastfield College only have a Women’s soccer team, so one that I would never have visited otherwise.

Another late kick off due to the women’s game beforehand overrunning. This was also difficult to confirm, as unusually for a university, their website has not been updated for 4 years. As for the game, every attack in the first half looked like it would produce a goal, whilst the second half looked like neither side would have any of adding to their tally.

The Texas Collegiate Soccer League is competed for by universities who don’t have ‘soccer’ as part of their official athletic programme. Hence, most games appear to be on outside facilities, rather than proper enclosed ones. From the car park, the path to today’s pitch went along the back of the very impressive pitch used by the TCU Women’s team, where F.C. Dallas played a home U.S. Open Cup match in 2015.

Baylor knew a win today would see them qualify for the end of season play off finals.

Wiley College Wildcats v University of the Southwest Mustangs

This had always been my plan, but at Wiley’s own pitch at the college. When I arrived home on Friday night and checked the very good Wiley College Facebook page, it said the game had been postponed, which was not a great surprise as their home match on Thursday had been abandoned due to heavy rain, leaving the pitch in a right state. However, something made me look at their Facebook page on Saturday morning and a posting at 9.31am said the game was back on and even had the address of the new venue. It certainly helped that the visitors had already travelled from New Mexico and certainly didn’t want a wasted trip. I expected the game to be played on an outside pitch, so was very pleased to find it was in fact at the schools American Football Stadium.

A little over an hour from Mount Pleasant saw me arrive in Longview and time to grab some food before kick off. Walking round the pitch towards the stand I also managed to bag the last team sheet at the match as they were on a table near the refreshment stand and free to pick up. As for the match, it was as comfortable as the score line suggests.

Second time in three days I had seen Tyler rattle in nine goals and again they eased off as if not to embarrass the opposition by getting double figures.

This was really awkward to locate as the address makes little sense and my SatNav didn’t recognise it in any configuration of the names or numbers. In the end I got an address in the vicinity and used the old method of writing down a route from there. The early kick off also meant a double opportunity by way of a 50 mile drive south to Longview, home of Le Tourneau University.

Dallas Stars v Anaheim Ducks

@ American Airlines Center

2500, Victory Avenue

Dallas, TX 75219

Admission $202* Parking $40*

Programme free, 100 pages.

* Face value of two tickets, plus parking , was $444. However, as the tickets were purchased in a corporate charity auction, including parking less than 100 yards from the arena, we picked them up for a total of just $105 !

The seats were just 6 rows from the front, just offset from the halfway line. I had only ever watched ice hockey on television up until now and found it much harder to follow the action here, especially when the puck was along the near side of the ice as there are huge blind spots due to the fences and player benches.

I had been to the American Airlines Center previously, having seen Dallas Mavericks versus Atlanta Hawks in the N.B.A. (9th December, see Basketball  Section) so knew what to expect. The main difference, due to the configuration of ice hockey, is that capacity is lower, being  18,532. Most, if not all, Stars games are played to a full house and tonight’s sell out for the season opener certainly backs that up.

The Dallas Stars moved to Dallas in 1993, having previously been the Minnesota North Stars franchise from 1967, based in Bloomington, MN, until the move. By the 1978-79 N.H.L. season the team had merged with the Cleveland Barons as they were both struggling financially. The move to Dallas saw them based at Reunion Arena, before moving less than 1.5 miles to the AAC in 2001.
