I never got to visit this ground back in the early 1990’s when it was used by the original Wombwell Town during their days in the Central Midlands League, so with the newly formed club now using it, it became top of the list for a midweek visit, especially as the number of floodlit matches here will be pretty low due to the small number of teams in their division.

Wombwell are in Division 2 of the Sheffield County Senior League, having won their opening three league matches. Bentley Development are in Division 1 North of the Central Midlands League, which is in effect one level higher.

The gulf between the two teams was massive. Wombwell could have easily scored 15 goals, but failed to do so, with a combination of poor finishing and a very good visiting ‘keeper keeping it down to just the seven. There looked to be a slight hope for the visitors when they reduced the arrears to 3-1, but they were totally overwhelmed in the second half.

Wombwell have ambitions to climb the pyramid. On the field they look to be going in the right direction and the ground is certainly good enough to get them up a few more levels, although the floodlights would need improving as they were really poor, although there were a number of bulbs not working, which certainly didn’t help.
