The Saints Cup takes it’s name from The Saints Pub, which is in the Millbrook area of Southampton, across the road from the Mansel Park ground of Bush Hill F.C. There are two groups of three teams, playing on a round robin basis, where they play each other once, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi finals. These two had both lost their opening matches to Bush Hill, 0-4 in the case of Testlands and 1-5 for Hedge End Rangers, so this game was winner takes all.

The first half was pretty even (this was 4th v 3rd in Division 1 of the Southampton League, as far as final league positions go for the season), but Testlands managed to take a 2-0 lead into the interval. Three goals in the opening twenty minutes of the second half saw them go 5-0 up, before the visitors pulled a goal back. A penalty then saw Testlands go 6-1 in front and it could have been seven a couple of minutes later, but having been awarded a second penalty, they let their ‘keeper take it, but his effort was well saved. Hedge End Rangers rounded off the scoring, pulling it back to 6-2, with a far post header late on.

Above : Testlands make it 4-0.
